My March Fiction Pick

My selection this month isn't fiction; it's about reading fiction.  John Sutherland's How to Read a Novel elevates your fiction reading!  He gives funny, smart advice about how to approach reading fiction and how to choose books.  I love that he says "It is, I would maintain, almost as difficult to read a novel well as to write one well."  Read this if you want to read better - to choose books with care, to savor rather than consume fiction.

My February Fiction Pick

I started - and did not finish - a zillion books this month... Roddy Doyle's new Paula Spencer is just too tough for me to read.  Carl Hiaasen's Nature Girl is too much like his other books.  The Intellectual Devotional is a great idea but sort of tedious.  I finally returned to George Pelacanos and read his 2005 Drama City.  Again, gritty but such vivid characters.  You know that feeling when you can't bear for something bad to happen to a favorite character?

I read Drama City (and some others) on Sony's new Reader.  It's a pretty slick piece of technology - the screen is great.  You can increase the font size when your eyes are tired.  Loading books is fast and easy.  I've got about 20 books on mine and I think it will take up to 50.  I really like it for travel - it weighs less than carrying a hardback.  The only thing I don't like is that I can't write in the margins.

1/15/2007 | ONE GOOD TURN at Barnes and Noble's site
My January Fiction Picks

In the mood for a mystery will really well drawn characters?  I've got two recommendations for you:

One Good Turn by Kate Atkinson starts with a crime in Edinburgh seen through the eyes of a number of people and the action starts from there.  The pace is great and the characters even better.

I know I am slow to the George Pelecanos fan club... I loved his newest book The Night Gardener.  It's a gritty mystery in DC, also with really vivid characters.

Enjoy!  Amy

Need a little happiness?

Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert is great!  He is smart and funny and tackles an incredibly elusive topic with lots of research.  The most intriguign thing is that so many of the research findings are counter to conventional wisdom.  Really well written.  A good investment of time.

Cool Blogs!

There are a bazillion blogs out there.  Some of my favorites include:

Guy Kawasaki's.  Guy's posts are thought provoking and actionable.  He is a huge fan of lists/steps.  Much of his material is geared toward entrepreneurs but I find it applies more leadership.  You can find him at http://blog.guykawasaki.com

Seth Godin's.  Seth makes you think!  He reacts to the world around him and looks at things from a very interesting perspective.  He is a marketing guru but again alot of his musing pertains to leadership.  You can find him at www.sethgodin.typepad.com

Max Goldman at Success Factors.  Max addresses performance and talent management issues.  He presents lots of cool data and has a great sense of irony.  You can find him at http://blogs.successfactors.com/workforce-performance/

Enjoy!

Cool stuff I read this week

I do – as you can imagine – a fair amount of reading.  Thought you might like a heads up on the most interesting articles and books that I’ve read recently.  You may want to check out-

Fortune Magazine – “Five Ways to Ignite Your Career” by Anne Fisher.  She surveyed head hunters – it’s a cool list of 5 things, takes 2 minutes to read. (Star Power on the Fortune cover.  Page 50)

Business 2.0 – “Why Employees Should Lead Themselves” by Jeffrey Pfeiffer.  An alternate management model that allows more voices to be heard, one page article. (The 2006 Smart List cover.  Page 76)

The New Yorker – “Troublemakers – What pit bulls can teach us about profiling” by Malcolm Gladwell.  The article makes you think about how you use generalizations.  (Feb 6th issue.  Page 38-43)

Building Better Boards – A Blueprint for Effective Governance by David Nadler.  GREAT book!

FICTION A Changed Man by Francine Prose  Best book I’ve read in a year.  The underlying question in the book is “what does it mean to be a moral person?”

Enjoy!  Amy
